"There's a lot of alien stuff going on!"

Jonathan shows the trophy he won at a charity football match, August 11th 2002.

How are you?

I'm very very well, I'm having a good rest at the moment after Godspell. I'm finding it a bit hard at the minute to get motivated because I've had like about a month off now and my body's stopped. But I'm sure in the next few weeks I'll be getting very excited when we start rehearsals.

Are you looking forward to playing Dr. Frank N Furter?

I'm very much looking forward to playing it. I think it's probably one of the best parts ever written in a musical. It's a fantastic part. A big reason I chose to do it is because of that fact and also it's a big shock factor. Nobody expected Jonathan Wilkes to be doing this and that's what I want to do. I want people to come along and see another side to me. They've seen the nice side now, they've seen the nice boy. But don't get me wrong, I'm not going to be a horrible person. But it's time to give me a bit of edge and that's why I want to do this really.

Can you tell us a bit more about the musical and in particular about your role?

What it's all about for people who don't know the Rocky Horror Show, it's about a young couple who just got married and who were going on their honeymoon and their car gets broke down. And the only thing that they could see is this big castle, which they go knocking up to and ask to use the phone and it ends up in dr. Frank N Furter's lab. All kinds of weird things go on. He gets to sleep with both genders and there's a lot of alien stuff going on. It's fun, it's a good story. The first half I'm only on for twenty minutes, the second half I'm on for the whole of the set. It's kind of a sad story in the end really because all his dreams and everything he's trying to do, it's all shattered and gone wrong and in a way his life is over.

It must be such a big change from playing Jesus in Godspell.

Totally. Playing Jesus or playing a transvestite is a massive change. But I think that's why I wanted to do it, show people every side to me. I thought that if I could pull this part off and do really well then I'd feel as if I can do anything. It's a challenge as well, which is good. You could get other parts, and I could probably do them standing on my head, and get a bit bored. Don't get me wrong, I loved Godspell but come the end I thought 'I've done enough of this now, I need a new role'. But Frank N Furter is a role where you can play with yourself. There's been a lot of people who have done it in the past but you can do it Jonathan Wilkes way, and that's the way I'm gonna be doing it - my way - as Frank Sinatra once said.

Do you get embarrassed when you have to wear high heels, etc?

I got measured for my shoes the other day and I'm size 11. On stage I'm gonna be 6ft5. They are making me wear them from the very first day of rehearsals, I think I'm gonna be a bit embarrassed probably.

Were you surprised by all the positive reactions you got when doing Godspell?

It was great. All of a sudden it turned around - from having this horrible stigma of being Robbie Williams' best mate - to people going 'Oh, he's really good actually and he's got a cracking voice and we like watching him.' And that's great. The more and more people who come and see me live, the better. You can't judge a person on a three-and-a-half-minute single. You've got to come and see somebody if you want to really properly judge a person. That's what a lot of fans started to do and it's getting bigger and bigger by the performance and that's what I want more and more of really.

Doing 7/8 shows a week must be very tiring, what do you do to relax?

When we did Godspell we did eight shows plus playing the two parts of Jesus and Judas it was kind of tough, but it was hard because I had to do so much local press everywhere we went. It was hard work. I tried to chill out as much as possible; watch films and play golf.

Do you get nervous before you have to go on stage and do you have any pre-show rituals?

I probably will be nervous the first few times I go on as Frank N Furter, like I was with Godspell. Pre-show I tend to go to the toilet and I belt out one particular song, which is an old Temptations song. I don't know why I do it, but I do it every time. And also I have a big poo! Just kidding!

You and Daniel MacPherson seemed to be very good friends. Do you still meet up?

I've just dropped him off actually! We are very good friends, in fact: 'he's my lover!'. No, we are very good friends and he's doing well. He just got a part at 'the Bill' and I'm very pleased for him. I thought Daniel did very very well in Godspell cos he's not a trained singer. And people who knew voices knew that when they listened to Daniel, but he got away with it. Where I on the other hand am not a trained actor, but I sort of get away with it with my cheeky smile!

First you released a single, then you toured up and down the country doing Godspell. Which one of the two do you prefer?

The musicals, because I get to perform. I get to be on stage for two hours. At some of the events with Just Another Day I used to turn up and I'd be singing for two-and-a-half-minutes and I'd have to mime. I hated it. To be honest I never believed in my song, I got told that that was the song I had to release. I wrote that in a day where I was thinking 'this is gonna be a b-side', but record companies have different opinions and sometimes they are a lot more powerful than I was at the time.

Do you still write songs?

Yeah, I'm not just playing my album, because I'm definately gonna release it. I want to tie a lot of things in.

So you are thinking about releasing another single?

Yeah, I'm definately gonna release another single. I'm gonna be tied up doing Rocky Horror for eight months and I've just been offered so many more things. But I think one move that I'm gonna be doing after Rocky Horror is to release a single from a show and then back it up with my album and then maybe release a song like 'Judgement day' or 'Sexed up'.

Do you feel more recognized for your own talent now, than let's say about a year ago?

Yeah, I think a big reason why I feel more recognized is because of the Swing album I did with Robbie. We did 'Me and my shadow' in the Albert Hall. But it was great doing that in a way we did in in a piss-take. And people saw, the press especially and said: "Oh he's actually really good" and a lot of Robbie fans as well. And all of a sudden it was like: "Oh he's really talented and we didn't really give him a chance". So that's good, that's fine.

So do you think that was the big turning point?

I think that was a big turning point and obviously a lot of the Robbie fans came and saw me in Godspell and saw even more of me. So yeah that was the big turning point. I think at the time if I had gone and released another single straight after 'Just another day', where my record company wanted me to I think I'd be really struggling now, I really do. But because we didn't, we did 'Me and my shadow' and we did Godspell, it's kept that buzz of Jonathan Wilkes around. Especially in the industry, there's a good buzz going around about me. Straight after Godspell I got offered four musicals, four big major musicals, which is fantastic. The reason, like I said, why I chose this one is because I don't know what's gonna happen which is the best way to live really.

Seeing this is for your website, do you go online often and what sort of sites do you visit?

I just started to go online I really have. And I just got myself a laptop, so I'm gonna do a lot more. I'm a nightmare for stuff like going on sports sites. But I find it's great you can just click on anything! I've been so ignorant to it. It's very powerful.

Living with Rob, you've obviously seen all the downsides of being very famous, doesn't that put you off sometimes?

It does, but I'm a 24-year-old lad now who has seen a lot of things in life, being with Rob through his drink and his drugs. And you learn a lot. But as long as I keep myself the way I am and I don't change and I have the people around me who I want to be around me, then that's the main important thing. Don't get me wrong, I can go and say something, or do something stupid but everybody does that. But I don't think it puts me off, cos it's in my blood. I'd be lost if somebody said 'you can't sing anymore', I don't know what I'd do. I really don't. So it's a good job I can!

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

I don't want this to sound in a cheesy, crap way, because it's not gonna be. I'd like to see myself on Broadway. I'd like myself to have an album out like Michael Ball does, but do it a lot better. He served the purpose, he is very good, but it's time now for somebody else to take over - who is a lot thinner.

Finally, do you have a message for your fans, or the people who will read this?

Thank you ever so much for your support, and keep logging on cos we're gonna have a great time!
