Q&A part 9 - June 2005

There is no escaping for Jonny this time as his mum Eileen and his niece Olivia are there to let us know whether Jonny's telling the truth!

Hi Jonny, can you tell me whether you'll be taking part in Ant & Dec's celebrity golf tournament?
Claire from Kent

Jonathan: "It is true I'm in the show, but I'm not playing I'm presenting. I'm on the course and will be on the show. I'm looking forward to it, it's going to be fun."

What was your reaction like when you were asked to play Tommy?
Amy from Southampton

Jonathan: "It was something completely different, so I was ready for that challenge whether it would be Tommy or something else. It was a big move because this show tried to tour about 8 years ago and it closed after 3 weeks because it didn't do very well. It was kind of nerve wrecking and a bit of a risk, but it was a risk I wanted to take on. I've enjoyed it and I hope the fans have enjoyed it, but I think they have."

What's your favourite song to perform in Tommy and why? See you again soon!
Hayley from Liverpool

Jonathan: "Hello Hayley! My favourite song would probably be 'I'm Free', cos I get to be angry. I like it, it's very explosive. But I also like 'Pinball Wizard'."

Olivia: "You like all of them! And me..."

Jonathan: "There you go, Olivia is answering my questions for me!"

Are you an emotional person? When did you last cry?
Claudia from Germany

Jonathan: "Yeah, I'm an emotional person. The last time I cried was when I watched a film. 'Remember the titans' made me a bit upset. It's a good film with Denzel Washington, I recommend it."

In which city did Tommy get the best reaction?
Cat from Liverpool

Jonathan: "I'd say Glasgow, Glasgow was possibly the best week on tour crowds wise. They were really loud and they got really into it. It was good."

Do you have your own plane?
Hannah from South Wales

Jonathan: "How much does she think I earn??? I've got my own toy one, but no... My toy one is a 767 Bomber!"

Hi Jonathan, you're fantastic, do you ever get bored of doing the show over and over?
Sue from Liverpool

Jonathan: "Hi, thank you. It sometimes gets hard to motivate yourself, but not really, no. I'm still enjoying the show with a week to go, so that's good. I think this one has just been nice, about 4.5/5 months. But give me another month, I would have been a bit bored. I'm alright on this one, I've enjoyed it a lot actually."

Do you have any phobias?
Mandeep from Birmingham

Jonathan: "I'm not a fan of pigeons and birds. I remember going to Trafalgar Square as a kid and my dad thought it would be very funny to put bird seed on my head. And all these pigeons came and flew on my head and it has freaked me out ever since."

I just wondered how did you get the scar on your side?
Alicia from Brighton

Jonathan: "That was the Falklands."

Not Vietnam?

Jonathan: "No, that was another one."

Jonathan's mum: "Followed by his appendix."

Jonathan: "Mum, you're not supposed to say that! OK...it was my appendix."

Is there any chance of a Jonathan Wilkes calendar in 2006?
Linda from Holland

Jonathan [laughs]: "Ooh, I don't think so, I can't imagine me in some tighty-whities, posing!"

Is there any Tommy merchandise available? It's such a fantastic show!
Debbie from Kent

Jonathan: "No I don't think there is actually, it's not like Rocky and Grease where we had merchandise available. This was a very unique show, nobody really has ever really tried it before on tour, so it was a big experiment, cos it's such a different concept. I knew with this show ticket sales wouldn't be like they were with Rocky, Grease or Godspell, because people don't know Tommy. I think with merchandise, people already had the Who album, so there's already an album out there, so you'd be selling old-hat stuff really."

A lot of people ask for a soundtrack...

Jonathan: "You never know, I'm going to be doing an album hopefully soon and I might put a couple of tracks on there."

Did you have fun on Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway when you went undercover?
Becky from Pennington

Jonathan: "Yeah, but I reckon I was the most nervous I've ever been! Remember these guys do set-ups all the time and I was so nervous thinking they were gonna twig on as soon as we got there. But it all worked out very well, it was very funny."

Hi Jonny. I had a perfect day when I saw Tommy, what's your idea of a perfect day?
Siobhan from Glasgow

Jonathan: "Probably play golf in the morning, then go and watch a football match at night and then go for a nice dinner."

And in between the golf and the football match?

Jonathan: "I'll have a drink in the bar..."

What's your favourite Neil Diamond song?
Amy from Hednesford

Jonathan: "Oohhhh...I'll have to say 'Hello Again', but I do love 'America' (Olivia starts singing the song!), see, she even knows it! And 'Sweet Caroline'."

If you saw a girl with her skirt tucked into her knickers would you walk on by, or would you tell her?
Tracy from Glasgow

Jonathan: "I'd tell her. I'd make a joke out of it first, but then I'd tell her!"

Have you got a sausage dog and if yes, could you send me a photo please?
Barry from Shelton

Jonathan: "Have I got a sausage dog??? No...I haven't got a sausage dog. I do have a niece called Olivia, but that's as far as it goes!" Olivia pulls a right face!

Hey Jonny, how did you get into acting and are you going to do more shows like Tommy?
Kim from Manchester

Jonathan: "I've always been interested in theatre, Godspell was the first big one I did. I've enjoyed Tommy as it's completely different to what I've done before, but I'm ready for some light-heartedness again. I'm ready to have a bit of comedy where I can have a bit of fun!"

Hi duck, well done on Tommy , it was fab! How did you manage to keep a straight face on stage when you were not supposed to be able to see or hear?
Siobhan from Glasgow

Jonathan: "It is hard because the thing about this show is you cannot corpse, because it will shatter the illusion for everybody. Everybody in this cast gets on so well and makes each other laugh, that it is a problem sometimes. In Rocky and Grease you could get away with that. In Tommy, you want to laugh but you can't and that makes it harder."
